History :

JG 73 1959 - 1964 :

On 01.04.1959 began the build-up of the JG 73 at Ahlhorn AFB. At the end of the year the new Wing moved to Oldenburg, where the JG 73 was officially activated on 01.12.1959. The Wing was equiped with Canadair CL-13 B Sabre Mk.6.

In Oktober 1961 the Wing moved to it´s originally planed homebase Pferdsfeld.
The new aircraft which should be introduced in 1963, the Fiat G.91 R3, has some technical problems, so the already arrived Gina´s must be given back. The older Sabre Mk.6 got now an new role as a Fighterbomber, because the Wing was reformed to Fighterbomber Wing 42 in 1964.

JG 73 "Steinhoff" 1994 - today :

The changings, following the German Reunification, lead to a need of an Fighter Wing in the area of the former German Democratic Republic. The Fighterbomber Wing 35 was choosen to form the basis for this new Fighter Wing at Laage AFB, the JG 73. It was officially activated on 31.03.1993.
Because the former NVA has flown 24 new Mig-29 the new Wing should become two different aircrafts. The 1st Squadron, based at Laage, should fly the Mig-29 and the 2nd Squadron, based at Pferdsfeld until 1997, should fly with the F-4F Phantom II.

1997 the Wing got the traditional name "Steinhoff".

At the end of 2002 the 2nd Squadron began to prepare for the Eurofighter and was temporarely deactivated. The 2nd Squadron followed in August 2004, when the last Mig-29 were flown to Poland on 04.08.2004.

In 2005 both Squadrons were reactivated and build up with the new Eurofighter.
Beneath the task of Air Defence the wings second task was the training of new Eurofighter pilots.
