History : |
On 13.03.1961 the Fighterbomber Wing 36 was activated at Nörvenich AFB. The first operational aircraft were Republic F-84 F, which came from JaboG 31. But already in August 1961 the unit moved to Hopsten AFB. The 2nd Squadron was activated in 1962 and it´s primary task was to train the new pilots which came from the USA to fly under european conditions. In 1965 the Wing began with the transition to the F-104 G and the pilot-training was given to WaSLw 10 at Jever, so that the Wing was now a normal Fighterbomber-Unit. Already in 1972 the F-4 F was introduced and the 2nd Squadron got back it´s task of pilot-training, but now only for the new F-4 F pilots. 1985 the Wing got´s the name "Westfalen". After the German Reunification there was some need for more Fighter Wings and so in 1991 the Wing was renamed to JG 72, but stayed at Hopsten AFB. |
